Why Did China Kill ‘Avatar’? – by Mackie Jimbo

I remember seeing Hong Kong being handed over to the China after more than a century of British rule. At that time, I was more interested in the politics of the playground than the politics that ran the United States and the world. Times have changed, for the most part, I grew up. I read something very poignant on someone’s facebook status one time. It was something along the lines of,

The 19th century belonged to the British. The 20th century belonged to America.  The 21st century will belong to the Chinese.

I don’t like China’s record of human rights violations. I don’t like China’s “Great Firewall.” I don’t like it’s role in censoring information for the people. I don’t like their One Child Policy. I don’t like the dangerous chemicals found in products made in China. A friend once defended China and how democracy will never work due to the sheer size of it’s population.

How do you explain India?

You should take a look through “From Heaven Lake” by Vikram Seth. It documents an Indian born scholar’s travels across west-east China, and frequently compares the state of urbanization and politics to that of India.

He makes an account of the Chinese peoples’ emotions towards the government by comparing their standard of living to that of India. What I found kinda interesting and relevant to your post is that he admits that the control by the Chinese government by means of force, incentive, and sanction are effective means of ensuring that the people are socially cared for—more so than that of the unbalanced and unmet needs of those in India. This social care, however, is at the expense of public involvement, voice, and ultimately social equality. (pg. 103) You gotta realize, the Chinese hold firm onto a “things are bad but we can’t complain” mentality ’cause of its history and how rapid it’s grown over the years. In my opinoin, that’s precisely what makes the Chinese people so hard to understand, especially from foreign perspectives so accustomed to public opinion.
