Why The Media Ignored The Nashville Flood

By Van in Design

Today’s headline is a bit dated, but I was motivated to learn more about this because of what happened this morning.

My morning ritual involves listening to Kevin and Bean on KROQ during my commute to work. They were interviewing David Spade to promote an upcoming movie, but more importantly to also promote a charity event he was involved in to help raise money for those affected by the flood in Nashville – his Joe Dirt fans, as he called them.  Flood in Nashville? I personally think I do a pretty decent job of keeping up with current events, yet I haven’t heard or read about such a thing happening. Approximately $1 Billion in damages, more than 30 people dead and barely a peep about it on national news. David Spade argued that it didn’t receive a lot of coverage going against the Times Square bombing attempt and the BP oil rig leak.

The article by Andrew Romano from Newsweek presents pretty interesting points about the 24/7 news cycle, journalism and the narrative and themes that make stories compelling. It definitely resonates with my cynicism about today’s media.

So here I am doing my part to help spread awareness about this severely underplayed disaster.

The Soundtrack of Summer

By Van in Life, Music

My fondest memories of summer consist of me simply driving along the pacific coast or on a road I’ve never been on before, in true Californian-Americana style. I don’t mind these long drives with just me and my music. I vividly remember Rooney coaxing me through a bad breakup and one of the most trying summers of my life. A few summers later, Jack Johnson would play during my slow and lazy, yet peacefully harmonious days. Rooney’s debut album and Jack Johnson’s “In Between Dreams” weren’t just albums with one or two hit singles. I could sit down and listen through the whole CD from beginning to end. I can’t say that about a lot of music these days.

At Coachella, I was introduced to Temper Trap. It was the first set I was able to catch that day. Coachella is highly regarded as the beginning of the summer musical festival season and for me, listening to Temper Trap was the official start of my summer. It’s been nearly a month since Coachella, but I’ve absolutely fallen for their album “Conditions.” Ten amazing tracks from beginning to end. They were amazing live and they are amazing blasting through the speakers of my car. My favorite track on the album…

Sleepless About The Choice

By Van in Life

It’s has been one of those weeks. My room is dark. There are no clocks in my room. It’s reminiscent of a Vegas hotel room with it’s thick black-out curtains. It’s easily to lose my sense of time here. However, It’s 4:00am. I am restless and the only thing happening is this scene from the last episode of House, entitled “The Choice”, constantly replaying in my mind in a never ending loop. Story of my life.

Child is Lone Survivor in Libya Plane Crash

By Van in Design, Headlines

One 8-year-old boy survives, while the other 93 passengers and 11 crew members were killed in the tragic plane crash. Talk about miraculous. I suppose the word “miraculous” should be used if they all survived the crash. He’s a lucky boy nonetheless.

Angel Takes To The Street…

By Van in Design, Headlines

Police in Switzerland have hired a man to dress up as an angel as part of a campaign to encourage drivers to slow down. I have no idea why I immediately pictured an 80’s metal, three-wolf moon inspired poster when I read the title. It’s not my usual, but it feels nice doing something different. I’m not sure it would work. I’m certain he will demand attention if you were to see him while driving. Would I slow down probably not? It’s seems like an interesting concept for a campaign.

I’ve never been a fan of costume marketing. I’ve never once bought a pizza from Little Caesars because the mascot was on the corner pimping $5 large pizzas. However, the fact that I can recall the price, mascot, company name, product and location proves that it works. Another example was mid-April, right before tax day when I would spot Lady Liberty advertising for a tax preparer in a very dingy area.

Then you have the sign holders. If you are lucky, once in a while, you get one of the enthusiastic ones. In the heat of summer, they dance to the beat of the music in their headphones. They flip their signs up-side down, in 360 spins demanding one second of your time at a red light. Most of the time they just stand there and wiggle their sign back and forth seeing their shadow grow longer and longer as the day stretches on.  I always thought to myself, how this even works. They look miserable. Why would you want this type of energy representing your company and your brand? Then one day I see something that totally takes the cake.

I was at a red light and in the corner of my eye I catch a very attractive young blonde holding a sign. In that tenth of a second, I turn my head only to see that it was a cardboard sign of the top half of a blonde girl holding a sign, in which an actual person was hiding behind, swaying it back and forth. That’s right, hide your misery behind the cardboard blonde girl. Hide!

Will the angel help bring awareness and help people in Switzerland slow down? If not, here’s my idea. Everyone and their mom loves slowing down to look at traffic accidents. I would stage a 2-3 car accident. Have one car flipped over or something and have one of the wheels spinning as if the accident just happened. If you want you can even make fake flames like the kind you see in Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. Fake smoke. Fake fire. Who wouldn’t slow down for that?!
